For Prospective Role Players
What exactly is a Role Player?
A role player is someone who helps bring training scenarios to life by playing a specific character—like a civilian, bystander, or even an adversary—based on the needs of the exercise. Your job is to help make the training feel as real as possible so participants can practice how they’d respond in real-world situations. Some roles are scripted, others are more improvised, but all are essential to creating an immersive, effective training environment.
How do I apply to become a VxL role player?
There are two easy ways to apply. You can email your resume directly to roleplayerrecruiting@vxlenterprises.com. We will follow up with you within 48 hours. Or, if you prefer, you can complete the contact form and include a brief message about your interest in role player opportunities. Either way, we look forward to hearing from you!
What kind of experience do I need?
You don’t need any prior experience to become a role player—just professionalism, reliability, and a willingness to follow direction. VxL recruits adults of all ages and backgrounds, including veterans, former law enforcement, bilingual speakers, and individuals simply looking to earn flexible supplemental income. While acting or improv experience can be useful, it’s not required. We support a wide variety of scenarios, some with specific requirements like foreign language skills, medical training, or subject matter expertise. If you’re dependable and interested in supporting mission-driven training, we encourage you to apply.
Is training provided?
Absolutely. VxL role players receive comprehensive training to ensure they integrate seamlessly with each training program—whether it’s their first time supporting or their 500th. From safety and scenario-specific preparation to communication protocols, staying in role, and medical-scenario support, our orientation and daily briefs keep everyone aligned, prepared, and mission-ready.
Do I need to pass a background check?
Yes. All applicants must be at least 18 years old, U.S. citizens, and pass a background check and drug test. Some roles may also require additional security clearance, depending on the program.
What should I expect from a typical workday?
A typical workday begins with a muster, where role players receive a scenario briefing and any gear or props needed for the day. VxL’s on-site coordinators are available to answer questions and ensure everyone is fully prepared before the exercise begins. Roles vary based on the agency and training objectives, but maintaining realism is always a priority. Shifts can range from 2 to 12 hours, depending on the needs of the program. You can expect clear direction, safety guidance, and support throughout the day—including detailed briefings, access to all required equipment, and a dedicated point of contact to help you stay on schedule and in character.
Is being role player a full-time job?
Most role player opportunities are part-time or project-based, scheduled around specific training events. Hours vary based on program needs.
How much will I get paid?
Pay rates vary based on the type of scenario, location, and your level of experience. Role player positions are paid hourly or daily, and compensation is typically commensurate with the demands of the role and the background required. Specific rates will be provided when you're considered for an assignment.
